It behooves the game companies to take the effort to minimize the effect of cheating. Dickheads like this spoil the fun for everyone, and will eventually lead to people not buying games because they're rife with cheaters. I know I personally don't participate in online multiplayer games as much as I might otherwise in large part due to cheaters.

Of course, in American society, cheaters are often given a pass or hailed as "innovators". Look at the pathetic efforts of Major League Baseball to reign in steroid and HGH use, the small number of people who actually obey the posted speed limit, the widely held notion that everyone cheats--just a little--on their tax returns, and, of course, James T. Kirk's solution to the Kobyashi Maru simulation.

I very often feel in the minority since I >don't< cheat at video games, or my taxes, or at Monopoly, or solitaire.

This interview really hits home for me because I personally am friends with employees at bungie. Iv'e been to the dungeons where those guys work there butts off to make one of the greatest if not best FPS of all time and all this kid can do is cheat ?! Same thing with blizzard. I know people from blizzard as well and gold farmers ruin the economy of the game just to make money and cheat. It sickens me to read things like this. Cheaters are no better them spammers, hackers and thieves. Their actions should land them right in jail.

Just watch guys like this get beat; invariably they turn to their crutch, and exploit the game in ways that other players can't/won't. In retrospect I think it may be the drinking I did while pregnant. I never really wanted him, and this behavior, although a needed handicap, only adds to that regret. Oh well, I've heard children born with these conditions don't generally live long into adulthood. Fingers crossed.

if there was so much of a hint of down syndrome or "retardness" in your son, surely you or any medical professional could have detected it in him at a very young age. That only reflects poorly on you as a bad mother (whether your pretending or not).

My baby brother has down syndrome, and while he may not be as developed as the average 4 year old, hes still a very bright child. People of special needs are no different from you or me, they just grow and learn more slowly.

Guys, the reason people cheat is not because they can't play, it's because they enjoy seeing other people unhappy. They are obviously loners with low social skills, and having people cuss at them and yell feeds their ego's; it makes them feel important and popular. I know all this because I used to use bots back in the quake 2 days. I was lonely and single. Now I have a family and don't get off on ruining peoples fun.

Now, the real evil cheaters are the ones who exploit the system to make money (anyone remember the ole diablo 2 item dupe hack? SOJ's all over ebay)

I knew a few guys like this. They have limited IQ levels. They get their arse handed to them in real life so they try to compensate for that online. Many of them are lamers who just want to seem like a cool geek. Like that guy who bought his high end gaming system using his mom's credit card to act so cool p0wning you on some random PC game using cheats. Most are posers with no popularity and only annoying dick friends just like them. You would hate them in real life as much as online. Thus the reason they act like that online. Most of them work at Wal-Mart. Or shop there frequently.

While I do hate cheaters and modders, one of the proudest days of my Halo 2 gaming was the time my friend and I beat a modder. He was using the speed mod and super battle rifle, but was so bad he had trouble controlling himself. We ended up beating him 3-2 in CTF, pissing him off to no end. It felt good to have the modder being the one who was angry at the end of the match.

It also boggles my mind how many people think exploiting glitches in the map to "superjump" is not cheating, for the reason that "Bungie put it in there, they must want me to do it."

And this is why I haven't enjoyed an FPS game online since Quake 2.

I was very good back in the day, had some real good skills. But this was all before wallhacks and what have you came out. Back then, it was pure skill. (I think there were a few autoaim scripts for Q2, but finding someone using it was rare, and they often got kicked.) CounterStrike was fun with friends, but it only took me a couple of days playing it online before I realized that FPS games were so rife with cheaters, I'd never enjoy FPSing with Joe Random ever again.

I wax poetic about Quake 2, for that simple reason. Its the last FPS I played that wasn't riddled with cheats. Now I just play MMOs...which while they have cheats, are a lot better policed.

when you're afraid to play a game straight, there is a fucking problem. bungie has done a horrible job with cheaters. banned 10 times?!?! wtf!!!?! yes, the cheaters do suck, but i really fault bungie with dropping the ball on this. you can't play certain match making games cause you KNOW you will get cheated. when your game has reached that stage, you need to take it offline and fucking fix it.

Most of you seem to have missed the real reason cheaters cheat: power. Yes, some may cheat because they aren't as good as other players, or they can't solve a problem in a game and need a way around it.


But lots of cheating is done because it makes the player seem/feel invulnerable in the game setting, it artificially enhances 'skills' so that obstacles/puzzles/opponents all seem easier.


Regardless of why someone starts cheating, some cheaters enjoy that sense of power from cheating so much that it becomes a kind of addiction. Addicted cheaters will act like any other addicts, rationalizing their behaviour so it makes sense to them.


Why? In some cases, just playing the game is never fun enough for them. If the developers are savvy enough, their game will appeal to a large number of people but it will never be exactly the right flavour for everyone, and even if a cheater would agree that in every way conceivable that a game is perfect for them, they may still not achieve the satisfaction they're looking for without cheating.


It's not fun to be the victim of a cheater, but most people I've gamed with would probably agree that they've wanted to cheat, even if they've never done it.


Still, one of Schmuck5000's sentiments is correct: for as long as there are games, there will be cheaters. It's a bit frustrating, but it's there and it's not going away. It's only really a problem on an individual level when the cheaters can't stop themselves or, conversely, when the anti-cheaters get so worked up that they begin threatening the cheaters, or even planning/doing worse.

Unlike most cheaters I am a respectable one. I only cheat about... 1 to 3 times a month really. ONly when I really want to vent my stress, like if I had a bad day or something I usually go and cheat. I'm 22yrs old. I don't do drugs. I'm in college working on an Architecture Degree. I don't cheat in real life such as in tests, my girlfriend (YES, I do have one), etc. I've cheated before on console games like N64, Genesis, PSX but usually after I finish beating the game. I've only started to cheat on online PC games like CS: SOurce, BF2, BF: 1942 like 6 months ago, mainly out of pure curiousity to see what it was like. When I started out I played in cheating servers made specifically for cheaters. Playing in there was a total blast of fun. Very rarely did I actually join a regular server with my hacks for the sake of 'pwning' bitches and hoes. I leave only when I'm found-out or they think I am.

Anyway, a cheater is a cheater, but I really haven't cheated at all in the past 3 months due to school and my girlfriend. I still play games like BF2. That cheater he interviewed had an inferiority complex, he probably works at McDonalds as an Assistant Manager.

The reason that he doesnt cheat in Counter-Strike isn't because "people who play Counter-Strike are babies about that stuff." Obviously. Its because Counter-Strike comes with a fairly effective anti-cheat mechanism that permanantly bans users (have to buy the game again to get back online) and because most popular servers have admins constantly online that will kick/ban someone who is cheating or making the game uncool for legitimate users. Those of you who have given up on online FPS's because of cheaters are just selling yourselves short. If every game developer faught cheating like valve does and admins were as effective as myself and my friends on Counter-Strike are we wouldn't have these problems. Cheat all you want in a feeble attemtp at covering up your deep seeded issues, you'll never get away with it on the Counter-Strike servers I play on. Why? Because the programmers that design the game and the admins that run the servers are infinately smarter than these idiot cheaters. I play Counter-Strike every day and I can't remember the last time, or any time, a cheater spoiled my game. Case closed. :P

And one more thing, even if you do cheat you won't beat the regulars that play on my servers. Cheaters never win. Literally. The skill of any given player is obvious after observing them play for a few minutes. Thats all that matters. I don't care if you get a lucky head shot on me. I'll know right away if you are more or less skilled than me and thats what its all about. Its a sport.

I think there is a strong correlation between people who can have succesful real world relationships and those who cannot..

I would bet you that people who find nothing wrong with cheating and runing other people's experiences have a hard time having relationships because they cannot emphasize with other people, all they think of are themselves and this makes it hard to consider someone else's feelings, which is crucial in a relationship..

And he will go to great lengths to prove it as well. And he is not trying to play the game, nor is he trying to boost his stats. He's using a mod as a from of proof that he is better. I applaud the technical skill required to develop new mods. Obviously, Shmuck5000 gets more pleasure out of the modding than he does out of the playing. But I think modders should compete only with other modders. Think of it as a kind of "battlebots" -- the battlebots are the creations whose superiority is shown by competing againt other battlebots. Similarly, modders can show the superiority of their mods by competing against other modders. Are there already venues where modding is not only permitted, but encouraged? There should be.

Oh, and cheaters in regular games should be nuked with extreme predjudice.

to win a game is to take the advatage over adversary using actions allowed in a context, i mean the game rules.

to cheat, in computer games or olympics or everywhere else, is to do unallowed actions in the game context. games rules may be official rules or established rules by the currently playing gamers.

If I play in a lan with friends, and it has been said that it is allowed to perform cheat codes, for example, then I am not cheating if I do so.

if you fuckin want to pwn everyones ass, then you need to win !

now to win, you need to take advantage over others. if you cheat, you take advantage over others, yeah, but you can't win, in respect to what i said. if you like to have this advantage, then to train is the solution. at last you will be even to the other skilled people like you. at this point the is no way to take advatage while playing. why? because you can't train your skills in more complexe and challengeful context, i.e. you are already perfect in that context level. Now, use your modders skills, to mod everyones xbox so people become a little bit closer to you in skill and thus the game context will be harder and after a bit of training you will be more and more skilled.

you like:
1-to prove you modders talent: you will still mod some xbox
2-to see people jalous of you: everyone will be jalous of your unmoddified xbox skills
3-to receive insults: everybody will complain because you will still take advantage over them and you will still be insulted by less skilled poeple.
4-to have immediate advantage without training ? be god or play with you dog at chess.

i was playing diablo2 when they changed the game (patch 1.08). i studied very hard every formulas in that damn chaos sanctuary. my lvl1 use to wear lvl30 items just because i played for long looking for specific items i needed. also i had a caracter of each type boosted using the best strategies. everything without cheating. then blizzard changed the rules of the game I trained for. even if they where high lvls, none of my caracters where able to kill act1 monsters, because they where very specialized in weak points blizzard changed. i think this is no respect for the gamers, and so the is no need to respect the game at this point. i did not start to cheat at this game, but if i someone had told me he would cheat to ruin the game, i think i would have said nothing (sorry for grammar).
i suspect they changed rules in order to introduce their expansion, and force gamers to restart the game, which i won't. never tried it indeed.

I've softmodded my box EARLY, probly one of the first's out there since the exploit came out....MicRO$loFT didn't think that exploits were not gonna happen, in fact, if they did, i dont think they would have built such a COMPUTER like console. This cheater's answers are all over the board and contradictory. Big time. He points out how Bungie should have developed an anti-cheating engine to protect their game, then goes on to say how no game company should bother to do this, because modders and cheaters will always mod and cheat. He claims to be able to pwn anyone he comes across in a game without the cheats he uses, yet he still uses the cheats.

Then, there is that comment about how he is only evening out the playing field. He says that he cheats, because there is just as much chance of a modder on the other team. If he is modding, then he is saying that he is 10 percent sure that someone is cheating on the other team. Pure justification bullsh*t.

This cheater, like many others, is simply looking to place himself in some perceived position of power, because of his own self-esteem issues. His comments about not caring what other people thought of him is also bullsh*t. He would not be trying to be the winner through cheating, if he did not care about external responses. If he truly did not care, he would play the game for the fun of playing, win or lose. More importantly, he would play single player games, not multiplayer.

This is news? I must say that the level of journalism provided here is almost as bad as the intelligence of the cheater interviewed. I was hoping for an unbiased look into the mind of a cheater, and I found a disgruntled news reported who lost a video game and is complaining about it. How about some more in-depth questions to uncover the real reasons behind cheating, etc.

Asking if someone has a girlfriend is not a credible way to handle an interview when your follow-up questions include "Aeropause: Everyone online including myself see you as the scum of online gaming. How do you respond to that?"

This whole interview could have been so much more interesting.

While I think Schmuck is horribly off with some of his logic I found one thing I agree with him completley on: Why doesn't Microsoft/Bungie do more about this? On a PC there are many more ways to load malicious software but with a gaming console this shouldn't be so. I guess cheaters just aren't hurting them enough financially by ruining the gaming experience. I, for one have just cancelled my XBLive account in protest of the cheaters on there. I don't really want to move onto another FPS but it's not worth the frustration anymore.. and it's the only way to speak with my dollars.

Cheaters think of themselves only. They do not cheat "for the good of the team" or any other BS rationalization. They cheat because it makes them feel powerful or makes up for some other self-esteem problem(s).



Those of us who have the ability to cheat (technical or otherwise), but choose not to, choose to not cheat because we play for the fun of all involved. We empathize with other players and know if everyone plays on a fair and level playing field, everyone will have fun.



We are able to put aside our own need for victory (or whatever twisted gratification cheaters get) for the good of all. Cheaters are the same people who don't have those social skills, so the likelyhood of a significant other decreases dramatically. Their self-esteem issues or lack of social behavioral norms require that they "pwn" all the other players by whatever means necessary. This kind of emotional retardation usually doesn't fly in a relationship.



Therefore, the question is not at all irrelevant.

I've never understood how cheating at games can be fun for more than a short time. I'm thinking of the one of the classroom dialogues in Starship Troopers where Rico is questioned about how much he would appreciate a trophy if he didn't earn it. The Civics teacher goes on to say that the best things in life must be purchased other than with money (aka, the real free as in freedom). It's a small person who needs to lie to himself to feel pride. I agree with the interviweed schmuck. There _will_ always be cheaters and I will always pity them for the sad people they are.

As far a this being an internal compensation form however, it's relatively minor. I mean it sucks to play someone who has assured that there is now way possible for you to win, but it could be worse. Interesting backwards logic there by Schmuck5000. But that's pretty much what all honest gamers have to deal with. The sad part is that I honestly believe that the vast majority of gamers do not cheat, but anyone who is legitimately good is automatically suspect of being a cheater. I've never cheated at CS, but I've been kicked out of countless servers after being accused of cheating. It sucks, but it's just the suspicious atmosphere that's been generated by cheaters. (I always took kicks/bans from random servers as a badge of honor, though )


If you're an honest gamer, here are my suggestions:
1) Find a group of honest people to regularly play with.
2) Make your own server with said group of players and police it accordingly. You will find that other non-cheaters will likely appreciate this thus attracting more non-cheaters.
3) Avoid competitive power-gaming. When the competition gets fierce, the allure and rewards of cheating increase. I would be highly suspicious of any game competition that is not done as a LAN party/convention-style with on-lookers.

May I offer a new perspective on why some cheaters cheat?

Because, simply put, f**cking with nerds is really great fun.

This thread is perfect evidence of that. People freak out when you cheat and it can be really hilarious at times. Imagining some kid smash his controller while you listen to him scream his ass off is just plain fun.

The really wonderful part is, these players practice all day to be good, and I need not practice at all to ruin their entire f**king day.

So keep crying, keep giving me a reason. I need not win to enjoy myself.

there should seriously be some kind of level barrier for those who want to play the game fair and those who want to be jack asses. I mean in a fair game of football someone like this would immediatly be voted out and shunned from fair games..... or in a philly game of basketball he'd be stabbed to death. Some people can take games too serious, so I can understand where someone just wants to goof off because they can't play up par with the big boys. I mean compar this with a real game of pool at a local bar, or a serious game of poker, some players are too serious that it might be life or death. This kid wouldn't have done it if he was at a Lan party or even playing a game for money, instead he has the safety of anonymity. On top of that, there is this idea people have that a game like Halo 2 is less then a game of poker or Basketball. Like it's ment for kids, so we got all these aspects preventing people from taking the game serious.

Cheaters arent just annoying for the reasons everyones said so far but also because it makes things difficults for players that are very good that dont cheat. With rampent cheating you cant tell if your playing someone exceptionally good or a cheater and oftentimes good players will get kicked/banned because people think they are cheating (with good reason) when they are just very skilled.

The real job of a cheater isnt to win but to rationalize their actions.

The only way ppl like this will be stopped (and by extension, the mods themselves) is if everyone else adopts a zero-tolerance attitude. Simply leave the server and let him play with himself or put the no teaming rules on hold and gang up on the rat bastard (depending on the game of course, the second option might not be feasable). Refusing to play takes some resolve for some of you hard-core gamers out there, but continuing to play with someone who uses head shot mods and the like leads to nothing but frustration anyway. While I do not own an Xbox, I am frequently found on Steam playing HL2 and HL. Those are also rife with cheaters. They're easy to spot if you spend enough time in the games. In short, shun them! It won't take long before cheaters get the message they aren't welcome.

XBL on 360 has really taken some significant steps to help normal gamers avoid those with self esteem issues who find pleasure in out-scoring people by using cheats. I'm in the Recreational class, and I can honestly say that with COD2, I tend to have a decent experience, even playing with random players that I don't know. Yeah, I occasionally bump into a loser, but the host typically kicks him. Or if the idiot is the host, everyone bails out. There's no use wasting time on people like that. Yeah, I might get dinged for leaving early, but it's not really that serious in the long run.

You do have to wonder...doesn't it get lonely having people boot you or leave your game all the time? What a hollow way to play.

Instead of getting angry, I just chuckle and remember that the poor guy must really have a sad personal life if he has to play that way to make himself feel good. And remember, we need people like this in life: they're the folks who do the menial jobs that the rest of us don't want to do, but couldn't live without!

First off what offends me most about this interview is its bloody biased. You take an idiot who is supposedly 24 but has such a limited knowledge of grammer that I doubt he is out of middle school.
Second off, really what agrivates me is you seem to be attacking to groups as one: modders and cheaters. While I've got no real hatred for cheaters, they obviously have some issues to work out(is it really that important to win a damn game) modders are what make the games live. We take the step away from consumer to changeing the product, often for the better. Without our input, there would be no counterstrike, no Halo custom edition.
Third, I hear a lot of "Well; the companies should do something major to fix this!" Keep in mind the more power you give them over YOUR product, the more difficult it becomes to have user created levels, mods, which you ALL use. It is also this mentallity which leads to a company owned product licence, like the xbox, where microsoft claims that even though you paid $150 for it at the store, it is still legaly their property that you are meerly leasing; again, cutting short creativity. If you want to see an end to all creativity just becuase some people have this neurotic need to win, then by all means, continue to call for more big brother-esque means of limiting controls. But I for one do not like the way this is going, and your go with the crowd mentality is to the gain of those making money from the games, not you.

Its more along the lines of a weak character, the same issue that probably keeps many of these guys home on the weekends when others of their age are out dating chicks, pursuing sports or simply hanging with the guys. your fear of looking at your weaknesses and inability to address them comes out as pretending to be some kind of keyboard bad-ass to the other anonymous twinks doing the same thing. Wow, this whole thing has gotten pretty pathetic.

I think everyone here needs to quit hanging out behind their consoles and computers and get some sun light. Or better yet, go exercise or read a book.

I can remember back in the early eighties, playing arcade machines and people were already cheating.

What about all the console magazines with their cheat sections? I remember those well. I've used cheat codes, received duped items playing PSO, or heard about Botters in other MMO's.

But all the cheating didn't bother me, if I didn't want to cheat, then I wouldn't cheat.

The way I see it is, if you don't want to cheat or play with cheaters make sure they're not in the game with you. If you catch them cheating kick them out, and restart. What's setting up another game, you're there playing all night anyway, right?

While I believe cheating is wrong, you should develop your own skills in a game, modding the Xbox turns that small (did I just say that?) black box into so much more.
With homebrew software like XBMC my Xbox is now the equivalent of a Media Centre PC (Granted it can't play ultra high resolution video (720p) very well - only 733Mhz, mind you).

Yes, I have tried cheats in LAN games, and while they may be fun to play with at first (especially owning our local Halo 2 master multiple times) it just gets boring after a while. It's much funner to play normally.

Luckily the interviewer didn't submit any leading questions, or put any words into the interviewee's mouth! That would really have reflected badly on the interviewer, and might have lowered the tone and damaged the credibility of the interview.

The point of playing a game is so everyone can have fun, not just the winners. When playing multiplayer games like Counter Strike or Warcraft, people generally have fun playing, whether they are losing or not. Although frustration may kick in at times when players aren't doing so hot, most gamers are just having fun. However, cheaters change the whole scheme of things. When people are taking unfair advantages of the game, it no longer becomes fun. It shifts into a disgusting abuse of resources that usually ends in many people bitching, whining, and yelling.

Imagine playing a monopoly with two times more money than everyone else, or weighted dice that helped you roll just what you needed to get that monopoly, the game would basically be over in four rounds when you procured 3 key monopolies.

There are reasons for rules that crack down on bitches like this cheater. To keep games fun and competative. And to keep morons like this guy from ruining it for everyone.

its all because hes annonymous. if he did such things in real life he'd live in fear of the beat down he deserves once found out. gaming companies should setup accountability servers, premium anti cheat servers where everyone is identified and credit card info is logged. cheating results in ban and mugshot on webpage with description of behavior. leave other servers free for people who don't want that level of scruitiny, but give the honest people a choice to play cheat free. it really would be nice to identify such people so companies wouldn't hire them. these are the types that steal and do other corrupt things when they think they can get away with it.

This whole thing reminds me of the "l337 h4x0r" scene. I've read other interviews about "cheaters" who actually discover and create the cheats for games, and dedicate servers to cheating to invite others to try out their cheats against eachother. What struck me the most was the statement of jelousy, as if this person really thought others didn't cheat because they couldn't if they wanted to. Really makes me never want to play on a public FPS server again.

I'll straight-up admit it, I played and cheated in Counter-Strike on and off for about a year or so. Before that, I played CS amongst other FPS pretty seriously for a long time, and ran into those cheaters that you all curse. I hated them too. I didn't start cheating because I was terrible at the game, because I wasn't. I, as well as my peers, were as good as they come. I didn't adopt the complete lie of an attitude "can't beat em, join em." But there did indeed come a time where the game became boring and when I did decide to start running the hacks, became fun again. Obviously, as with any form of cheating, you require more and more of it to become effective at entertaining you (I guess you could relate this to crime, drugs, sexual encounters, etc etc) When that time came, I would just quit playing, but that game was always there to pick right back up and run in and own some face with zero effort and nothing but laughs and entertainment at the immature responses yielded from the 14-18 year old bracket I was usually pub'ing against. Consider it more of a voyuerism at the misery of people I could care less about.

Now, on the other hand, when I saw an honestly mature person trying to deal with me being the cheating person on their favorite server, I just bounced to a different server, feeling somewhat regretful and sorry that I had screwed up someone who honestly still gains fun from the game. Yeah, cheaters are immature. That's honestly the funnest part about cheating, it takes all the seriousness (failure factor) out of the game and allows you to just take in what games were about when you didn't freak out over random failures within the game. (Which I myself am one of those people. )

CS was the only game I ever cheated at, because in the end it actually did completely ruin the game for me. When I went back to playing authentically in CS:S, I couldn't take the game seriously. Mostly because it's the same exact game, due to the crowd of people who frequent it (for the most part)

The crowd who frequent the random hack forums are the most embarassing bunch of worthless human beings to exist.

Anyways, I always wanted to share what I thought about cheating with people who feel so negatively about it, not to try and soften the blows against any idiot (such as the interviewee) who cheats and is super-obscenely-proud of it, but to share the thoughts of a guy who isn't a complete social monster and can share some non-mongo insight on the subject. I don't have any kind of solution for what game creators can do to stop cheating, because honestly I don't think it will happen. But I do wish them luck.

Yes I'm sure all the people who call the cheater a "no-lifer" are quite contradictory of themselves. YOU play the game as much as this guy, and if anything, he should be calling the non-cheaters no-lifers. I know this may not compute with your closed mind and bias opinions but let me explain it for you. Non-cheaters are constantly bitching and ctying about cheaters, calling them every word under the sun... Mature stance? Think again. You obviously have nothing else to do apart from cry about cheaters in your basement. Go socialise, go to fucking college for god sake, hell get a job! I am a big fan of Halo 2 online play, I never cheat (I honestly don't know how and don't have the time to find out how), and I don't have a big gripe against "cheaters". I have difficulty distinguishing when there is a cheater in the room, but I estimate that I may come accross one on every couple dozen sessions or so of Halo 2.

But my real gripe, and I believe you will all agree, is not about cheaters, but quitters! Those I come accross every OTHER game!! And those are the real game killers: any Team game type gets automatically forfeited when one or two of your teammates suddenly dissappear from the board!

Cheaters in games just make me laugh. I would probably be upset at them if I came accross cheaters more often, but I don't. Quitters make my blood boil.

I play Counter-strike regularly, along with other Half-Life mods and games. I see hackers at least once a day. It does get quite annoying. Where that hacker goes wrong is atleast in my case is that I'm not mad at him because he's better than me, but rather that he uses an unfair advantage. Skill is one thing. I get pwnt fine with me, he's just better. But if he's hacking, then he is the scum of the earth. I can just see that guy going to jail because if he cheats at games, and finds ways around the system, why not cheat on his taxes, or scam people out of their money, one day he's going to piss off the wrong person, be it a cop, or someone els of power. He might even anger some other hacker, and in turn get hacked out of his comp, out of his steam account, out of his identity, destroying everything on his computer. I for one would be happy to see him suffer.

Me myself have never cheated while playing a game online. Out there I think it's important to see what I and my co-gamers are made of. What I do otherwise is up to me, and is not to be bitched on by anyone. The point I'm trying to make is that there are probably college student, or equivalent, like myself, who have an atleast decent level of education who cheat their collective asses off whenever they can. Sure they are somewhere between tele-marketers and the people who come to your door trying to convince you that their religion is the one and only on the "worthiness-to-live"-scale.
Does it make them bottomfeeding scum? Yes, absolutly. Does this make them retarded or in some other fashion mentally deficient? In a sense yes, but no, not really.
Anyone who is fed up with constantly being whipped, although claiming otherwise, is but a few clicks away from being able to cheat. And unfotunatly some will.

As a footnote: some of the conlclusions made by people answering this blog is for a lack of a better word appalling. To think that supposedly _sane_ people (Gooseman for instance and exemplified) would think to see a connection between cheating and bringing a gun to school is to me so far beyond disturbing that I can't find words to describe it. But on the other hand, I'm not american. Where I'm from we don't have guns, or more importantly ammunition, readily available at the local supermarket (as protrayed in Bowling for Columbine).
Just stop with the dr. Phil routine and think for change. Bad people do bad things. Cheaters aren't necessarily bad people.

I get it now...Everybody raving about that lame a** cheater (Loohooseher)that he has no GF is spending at least half a day playing OL, 1 hour of eating (a day), crying for 1 hour (after you loose from cheaters), answering dumb questions on this blog for 2 hours and reading it too, 2 hours arguing with your mom why you play 12 hours online (a day) and if you are lucky 4 hours of sleep.
Sum that up and the rest of the day you will have the amount of hours that YOU have left for F******.
I, myself do NOT play online (you are all loosers, anyways) but spend my day actually working and f****** (6 hours of work + 6 hours of F******, S****** and so on).
Yeah, my GF is begging me to play more Xbox but I rather F*** her brains out on a regular basis (and her girlfriends too).
Comment on that...

I caught my son cheating during LAN games with me on Comand & Conquer as well as BF2 and we had a talk:

1) You cheat because you have such low self-esteem at being able to learn how to play the game by the rules.

2) Once a Thief, Liar or Cheat, then Always a Thief, Liar or Cheat. In or out of the game, it doesn't matter. Once you do something like that then you have done it forever. There is no putting the genie back in the bottle.

3) I told him straight-up that my opinion of him as a human being just went down a couple of pegs and that my trust level in him for the things he does in real life would forever being eyed with suspicion. Why? If he cheats/lies in the game then he will do it in real life. No question about it. When push comes to shove a Man will fight, a cheater will cheat/lie/steal.

4) To get the point across; we took his birthday present (Alienware desktop, nVidia 7800 SLI rig, 2 months old) to the back yard. I gave him the option of pouring gas on it himself (if he was a man) or I could do it. He did. He also threw the match. Sure, a tough lesson to learn at 16, but it certainly got the point across. He is reminded of it every day when he has to ask permission to use MY pc to check his email.

As an former military officer, I can honestly say that I fear for the future of our country when the cheaters/modders grow up and go into the military. Try to "cheat" or get around the rules in real life and a Taliban will put a bullet in your head. THAT will put a period on your life in a hurry and spare the world one less lowlife.

I forgot to mention: I also hate people that commit suicide to "de-level", or people who create new accounts to start from level 1 when they get to levels above 20! I still hate quitters more than those two other types, but modders are relatively benign compared to those other three kind of players!

In any case, all these four types of players have no respect for the game, so they see no issue in breaking its rules... THAT'S the real issue!!

Oh, and English is not my native language, either, as you can probably tell... (and I can tell that's the same for most of you.)

I play Halo 2 on a regular basis and happen to run into many players that are cheating on a regular basis. They even have the balls to brag about having their account taken away by Xbox. It really doesn't really matter because they will continue to cheat and purchase a new Xboxlive subscription.

SilentMugwump lied when he says he doesn't cheat. I have played with him several times (bestfriend) and his friends list consists of several cheaters. He jokes about playing in match made games with these cheaters and how funny it was to see the flying warthogs.

Well SilentMugwump, those players that make your blood boil because the quit, quit because of cheaters. For example, the other night I was playing against a team that had a great connection (they were host) and when they started getting raped by my team the connection all of a sudden had severe issues. Two of my teammates quit and would do you know! The connection was perfect again after the other team took the lead and we lose by 10 kills. We were up by fifteen kills before the session started to have issues.

I have been driven to purchase a new gamer tag, which is unfair to lower ranked Halo 2 players because I destroy them. Those games are fun because they don't cheat, but unfair. I am back to my normal ranks with my new gamer tag and find that almost every other game I play in has some sort of cheater playing.

In my opinion Halo 2 is one of the best games FPS I have ever played. Cheaters do ruin the online play and have made me want to stop playing Halo 2 for good. One day I am gonna get pushed far enough to stop playing that game all together. I am a very competitive person and playing Halo 2 to improve my rank fullfills that need to compete. Kinda unfair when someone has an advantage that is beyond their skills.

Oh well, just wanted to state my two cents.

Bio32nicle: Although I had ONE modder in my friends list at some point, I didn't know he was a modder until a couple of games later (he is no longer in my friends list, by the way).

But now Bio32nicle is extending the definition of a "cheater" here: if you have played with a modder or a cheater, does that mean you are a cheater yourself??

Take in account that the games I played with this modder were on invite only, and he only invited other gamers that knew his game was modded and that wanted to see what these modded levels looked like! No ranked games were involved...

But I did enjoy occasionally jumping into a modded game online... however, I KNEW it was modded and it wasn't a ranked game, just like the other players knew!

But extending the definition of "cheating" to having played with someone who is cheating... that's going too far, isn't it??

Like, for instance, if I played knowingly with someone who is level 20+ in one account, but now is level 1 in a new account... does that make ME a cheater?? Please...

First of all I don't cheat in any online gaming because winning a cheated game takes away the challenge which means no fun.

But talking about online gaming.. it's very hard to define what is cheating.

There are a lot of elements involved that affect a player's performance in online gaming.

For example the hardware. A person who live next door to the server with the best hardware that money can buy will definitely gain an unfair advantage over another player who live 1000 miles away from the server with minimum requirement of hardware.

Now are we to call the formal player cheater or latter player loser?

If we believe playing according the rules is fairness, then the rule itself and the environment it is related to must be fair. If it's not, then I see some of the cheaters' motives justified.

There are countless times when I felt sorry for other players who lost obviously because of their poor real life equipment, and I didn't gain much feeling of achievement because I knew a big part of my victory was simply the result of a hardware advantage.

If a cheater cheats only trying to offset its disadvantages such as lag or poor equipment, I don't have much to complain myself. But if I am the cheater under this kind of situation, I wouldn't continue playing the game because the game producer does not show enough effort to make the gaming environment truly fair.

Cheating is all down to pyshcology(spelling)A cheater has and still is defined as the one "who takes the easy way out". Now cheating isn't all bad, if its for a good cuase then cheat all you want. However when it comes to cheating "in games" and follow me on this one. How fun does it get? I play counter-strike big fan. But i was never too good. My hand-eye cordination is not what you'd call average. At some point i was on the verge of cheating/hacking. I was dying constantly and being ridiculed. So in the end i did resort to cheating but after only 2 days, it became pointless. all it really did for me was let me win without any real effort. It took the joy out, rather then working up my "skills" to better playing i took the easy way out. I of course stopped and started trying again to no avail i still sucked pretty bad but at least i was playing on my own skills with my own two hands and not some program who helps me aim or see through walls. Cheaters cheat for many reason whether they have social problems,they are bad at the game, need to vent stress or simply because they enjoy it. What the reasons we may never know but seriously does it give them the right to ruin it for others? these cheaters think they are so much better then others simply because they "pwn" you in a game over the internet. Sometimes cheaters aren't even cheating to be good they just do it to see what responses they get. They get off on people yelling at them. They have these twisted personalities, being happy everytime someone calls them a dick or a fag. It sick twisted people like this who will do even more harm when they grow up and go into society. I'm not saying put a end to cheating as that is impossible but i am saying we as people, have we no integrity? Rather then cheating why not try playing more and get better? By taking the easy path or the easy way out you're only heating yourself.

Oh come on. So he cheats, boo hoo. I don't cheat myself, (I don't even know how,) but when I play online games I find it rather entertaining when some guy who is concealed in the walls runs around at double the normal speed and pwns me. Or when they have infinate health or whatever.

It's just a game, nobody should care that much if they lose. We play games to have fun, right? Not to win. Just try and see the comedic value in cheaters! If it bothers you that much, then switch to another server.

I remember when we had a nice CS lan game at a friend's place. After an hour or so of playing it was easy to tell who had skills and who didn't. For the hell of it we all decided to load up some multiplayer cheats (with the consent of everyone!) and boy was there rucuss!! yelling and screaming, curse words left and right, but everybody was laughing. The guys who new how to play and played well were becoming targets for those who were frustrated by being pwnd all the time. Quite a fun time, but it's only fun because "everybody" was doing it. It's a very lame "tactical advantage" as one guy posted on a forum. my $.02

If you are as good as you say you are then why don't you play in competitions and win money? They are heavily monitored for cheaters so no one who cheats will win. Hmm alot of people here think that there are a lot of hackers on Counter-strike and on source but in reality it is much lower then people think.. i only run into a "TRUE" hacker that is making it so obvious that you have to say something ever 5 or so scrims but otherwise they arent cheating at an impossible level.. people bitch about speed hacks.. but they are the easiest hacks to beat.. jump on a box.. its funny watching a speed hacker zip around a box then pluging them in the face before they realize they cant get up there.. personally i think that if some one is going to hack at least do it on a server with other hackers... otherwise just let others play the game.. i havent really ever got pissed at a hacker but once and that was in a cal-main match back in the 1.5 days.. i was also screwed over at a lan contest. the contest was for a spot on a lan team.. i had made it to the semi-finals match and was playing on the same computer that i had played the match before so i didnt bother to check to make sure that the settings where right.. (all the computers were owned by the lan center so no cheating/hacks were on the computers) we it turned out after the match i noticed on the HLTV demo that all my shots were 6 feet to the left of the target.. Someone had changed my viewsize from the default 110 to 150 so that my screen was not the right size for the resolution. i didnt see the target in the actual spot but 6 feet over.. its wrong to cheat when it hurts others futures.. in a pub is one thing.. in compition is another...

You're all bitching about the guy, but the truth is he's doing what the software allows him to do. In real world if I don't close my flat's door, no insurance company is going to pay me for my stolen furniture and electronics, because it's my responsibility to protect my property from thieves not using tanks to enter my place.

The same is with computer software. You can't blame a guy for exploiting the flawed design of a game or hardware it's being run on. It doesn't really matter why is he doing it. Fix the client and the server to disallow known cheats, otherwise I'll just laugh at your face when you call him a loser.

Cheaters have been around since the first true PC games. I remember using cheat codes on old Apple games just because I got stuck or wanted to finally finish the darn game. As time progressed people would use the codes to advance them past spots they could not complete for themselves or past a bug in a game so they could continue playing. But when the first Lan games got released a new level of cheater emerged. They would use known exploits they read about or found in a game with other human players. That would then build animosity because it took away from the real process of playing the game. As games developed and progressed to internet play the cheating grew with it. Initially it was god mode cheats etc, but then it changed to more subtle forms of cheating making reloads faster or increasing movement speed. Things that if you were not specifically looking for it you would miss.

Now I will admit to using cheat codes in single player offline games I get stuck in, or am beta testing to get to specific locations to find flaws. But to use these codes or tweaks on an online match where other people can be affected or slant the gameplay in your favor unfairly is a sad state of affairs. I have run across hundreds of cheaters over my years of playing. They came in all types of forms. We would have fun hunting them down and banning them or making their online life hell. But it got old after a few years. Lost its fun when there seemed to be more and more of them in each new game release.

Once Punkbuster and other programs came out to detect specific cheats we saw a glory period of a few months or years where the cheats were not as prevalent. It was fun to play again. But eventualy, as always, cheaters will find a way to exploit things in their favor. They are not better players, or people that have so much skill that cheating is the only way they can have fun. Cheaters are people with a personality issue about losing. Losing to them is to lose face. They are weak willed people that need attention which they get by cheating. How do you combat a weak personality?

As technology expands cheating will become more difficult and as the programmers learn how the cheaters work they will be able to code more into the application to limit them. Will they go away completely , nope, but we can limit them in such a way that running across one in a game will be like finding a rare bird, or seeing bigfoot. At that point gentlemen and ladies I will be at my computer laughing my butt off, because I can say I just saw Elvis.

My favorite observation is that in general, the cheaters even suck at cheating. I am a top player in Halo 2 and have be playing pro instead of on live because I cannot play two games in a row without being modded. The sad part is me and/or my team will win half the games against cheaters because the lack skill in the game and in cheating. Mind you all that we do not even cheat when playing cheaters, yet still can win. I feel sorry for them and believe their demented brains be excavated from their retarted bodies and studied.

guys like him are scrubs....they can beat a noob....they might be considered intermediate maybe....but have simply been frustrated time and time again against even the lowest level leet players....they think each one is cheating...they can't comprehend that they were born with a lower level of hand eye coordination, AND IT PI$$ES THEM OFF!

Listen guyz, you make life hard for yourselves..i have been playing online games for over 4 years, mainly ut2003/2004 and CS:S, if you notice a cheater in the server then do the simple thing and leave!!! join another server or play a different game..moaning about cheaters is never gonna get you anywhere, yes it might make you feel better for venting that anger, but your only gonna get it back the moment a cheater joins you in game eh!!! Cheaters are here to stay until game producers install anti cheat software to their games, and i still dont think that will stop these kinda ppl cheating the system, where theres a will theres a way!!!

Sometimes in UT2004 when a cheater joins we wait to die and just dont respawn, the cheater spends about 5 mins walking around like an idiot on his own then leaves, then the game continues hehe

I cheat because I lack the skill most modern games require. I also hate wasting my money.
The difference is I have gotten better and I cheat less and less.
I've been gaming about 5-6 years now.
Even upto a year ago I couldn't pass the first level of some basic platform games (I just can't do multiple jumps with a timer running.), so I bought the Action Replay because without it I wouldn't have continued playing because paying $30-$50 for a game that I might get to level two on was not worth $15-$25 an hour for entertainment. If I want a poor value for my entertainment money I will go see a crappy movie. I am now at a point where I can play some games 70-80% of the way through which starts to feel worth it too me.

I have personal rules about my "Cheating".
I don't do it where it will negatively impact anybody I play with.
I buy mostly Single Player or Coop Games.
I don't play online.
When playing with others I want to come in as close to 50/50 they win/I win as possible. Or in Coop play sometimes it works out I will take the hits while player two does the shooting and takes the points.

I was very hesitant about buying a XBOX360 without an action replay device but I have gotten good enough that if it is truly a tough spot I ask my nephew to do it for me.

Cheating to the degree described is just stupid and is more about ego than fun.

my take:

* Gold Farmers:
- To the a-hole who thinks its better to have them... Gold farmers screw up an econonmy that is intended to be managed by the hardworking gamers who take the time to level their "own" characters. You are just as far left as those people who think it is wrong to take care of the border in the southern united states.

* Cheaters:
- I have cheated on games that i have already have beaten, yet, not online. I believe those who cheat are not honest people. They shouldnt be playing a game that is too difficult for them to have to use an unfair advantage against the other players. Just because you have no life, doesnt mean you have a license to kill a game.

* Hackers, Crackers, Spammers and handjackers:
- Illegal. Its just as bad as stealing a dvd player from your local walmart. Spam and virus' occur from these a-holes and cost our pocketbooks millions of dollars each year in taxes. I should know, i used to work for the geek squad, and found that inicent, hardworking people have lost valuable family/freind photos, there identity, credit card numbers and even their personal lives.

i know that i am not the greatest at any given game, hell, i'll even go as far as to say i'm one of the worst at times, but that still doesn't give me the right to hack, no one has the right to hack, if you hack, you are a dickless looser who still lives in your mother's basement and probablly cries yourself to sleep every night with teddy bear in one hand, and your thumb in your mouth. Grow up and lear to face society, there is alwase going to be someone better than you, alwase. so insted of compensateing and pissing us off, go find a game that more suits your mental capacity, i hear that my cousin with down syndrome loves Dragon quest. just an idea.

I personally think cheating on an online game is evil
but after I beat almost any single player game
I cheat and get everything I wanted while playing
as a response to half of you
1 spammers,hackers,thieves,and cheaters kinda suck
(with the exception of hackers in that it is an incorrect term hacker means to hack at a keyboard until it does what you want, mostly programing.
cracker is the correct term for some one who does
bad thing that hurt other people or are illegal) but none of them save thieves and really bad crackers need to be put in jail
spammers are just annoying.
2 I am a game programmer (well i prefer systems programing but games are fun too) I don't care if someone cheats at a game I make. you don't have to play them its good they're having fun (why we make the games) I would prefer it not be at other players expense but if they try to cheat me then I will logout and play some single player game or log into another server or have a real life.

pass legislation saying that non compliance with the game EULA can result in a stipulary fine, that is sent out automatically. that would disuade cheaters from doing it surely.

I love cheating. Not to boost my stats or win anything (those are just bonuses), I cheat to ruin your day, to pi** you off, to make you slam your controller and wish you never bought the game. That is where I draw my satisfaction from. I get a warm feeling just thinkin about it. Call me what you will I really could care less, because ill never stop. I have no problem cheating on a solo game, more often than not, its just that you dont have enough time to play through the losing part of the game and would just want to go through it cleanly. How many times can you fall over a dashing cliff with random behavior before you get pissed and drop it. But for team or network gaming, thats playing with people, and your not cheating the game anymore, your cheating the people, and that sucks. ive played starcraft once, he was so cheat that all of the experts in our pub were just about to place their 4 zealot and he has carrier already. We're not dumb players, infact were local tourney winners, but to be shocked like hell, that you bring your group of marines over for a good marine medic rush, or a zergling rush and be surprised with carriers is just f*!@!king stup!d. i hope he dies soon lame ass worthless peace of crap

Ok, I can't understand why they should cheat. Its no fun. The fun part of the game is gone then, but ppl, dont call all ppl cheaters if they are good. I play counter-strike: source, and I have ben called cheater evry fucking day. and he say we dont have balls 2 cheat, well, someone wants too play real. As someone who enjoys cheating I never take it online. I will only go for a single player game cheats. When I cheat it is for me and me alone. As dumb as he is though he does have a point. As long as there are games there will be cheaters.
